St. John Ministries

The Scholarship Committee - The Scholarship Committee wishes to encourage and support young people and adults to seek higher education. Scholarships are awarded to graduating high school seniors and adults in both traditional and nontraditional higher education who are active and participating members of St. John CME Church.

SHARE Program - Several members head this Ministry, which provides an ample amount of fresh vegetables, meats, fruits and dry goods for a very reasonable price ($15 and two hours of Volunteer Service). For additional information, contact Sister Jewell Williams.

Boy Scout Troop #1205 - The Scouting Department shall promote the scouting program for boys and girls as youth serving. The program promotes the love of God and Country through a series of Programs of Religious Activities with Youth. (P.R.A.Y.)

The Trustee Board - The Trustee Board is responsible for the physical upkeep of St. John and its properties. We are entrusted with ensuring that building codes are met and safety regulations are complied with. Our job is to ensure that the physical church (God's House) remains a warm, inviting place to worship.  Board members are appointed by the pastor. Current members are:

Stewardess Board - Members are confirmed by the Quarterly Conference upon the Pastor's recommendation. Their duties include:

Regular meetings are held the Saturday before the first Sunday of each month.

Steward Board - A Steward is one responsible for securing and managing the finances of the local church, as well as supporting the Pastor and church in every aspect. The Board of Stewards provides spiritual and shepherding oversight of members and is to care for them, along with the sick and the disorderly. Stewardship is a biblical concept. Jesus made it clear in the Scriptures that being Stewards is part of the will of His Father. The Board of Stewards set a Godly personal example in support of the church giving their time (Eph. 5:15,16), treasure (Mal. 3:10) and talent (Matt. 25:14-30). God blesses every member of our church with many gifts; consequently, we all are called to be Stewards. (Photo Credit: Sis. Gloria Greene)

Lay Council - The Lay Leader is elected by the Lay Council and confirmed by the Quarterly Conference. Lay Council meeting are held monthly at the church. The Lay Council is composed of all laity of the church and its primary objectives are as follows:

Christian Methodist Men’s Fellowship - A distinctive men’s organization known as Christian Methodist Men’s Fellowship is established within the Department of Lay Ministry at all levels. The purpose of this ministry shall be to help the Christian Methodist Episcopal Church:

We meet the 2nd and 4th Saturday of every month to discuss and set plans to fulfill our purpose. All men of St. John are welcome.


Commission on Membership and Evangelism (C.O.M.E.) - The purpose of The Commission on Membership and Evangelism is to work in cooperation with the Pastor, Presiding Elder and District Director of Evangelism in spreading the "Good News" of Jesus Christ and enhance the spiritual life of the congregation. Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

The Commission should meet at least once per month. The Commission Chairperson, in consultation with the pastor, shall appoint the following committee chairpersons. Where feasible the six committee may be combined.
  • Prayer Committee
  • Prospect Committee
  • Visitation Evangelism Committee
  • Membership Preparation and Assimilation Committee
  • Attendance Committee
  • Records Committee

Board of Christian Education - The Board of Christian Education develops and promotes the program of Christian nurture of the church according to the needs of the local congregation and community and in conjunction with the programs and policies of the General Department of Christian Education. Some of the responsibilities of the board are as follows:

The Board is under the leadership of the Director who is appointed by the Pastor and confIrmed by the Quarterly Conference and they meet monthly at the church.


Sunday Church School
- The Sunday Church School is a vital agency by which the church teaches its own. It provides the only systematic purpose instruction in gospel truth and its application to life. The staff meets monthly for training and enhancement. The Superintendent is nominated by the pastor, elected by the Board of Christian Education and confirmed by the Quarterly Conference. The Superintendent recommends the teachers and staff to the Board of Christian Education for election.


Women's Missionary Society
- The purpose of the Local Church Women's Missionary Society shall be:

  • To implement the mission and unity of the Christian Church in Christ Jesus
  • To make that mission and unity known at home and abroad
  • To encourage cooperation, fellowship, and mutual counsel, concerning the spiritual life and religious activities of the Christian Church
  • To encourage the study of the Bible and to assist in spreading the Gospel
  • To study the needs of the society in order to aid in the development of programs, people, processes and resources that will enable the Women's Missionary Society to fulfill its mission. Such studies shall enable the Society to react cooperatively to the moral, ethical, and spiritual issues inherent in spreading the Gospel
  • To work closely with private and public institutions in the fulfillment of common goals, insofar as such cooperation is consistent with the Constitution of the Women's Missionary Council


  • The St. John Messenger Newsletter
    - The Newsletter is published monthly during September through June. The July/August issue is combined. The Board of Christian Education publishes the newsletter.


    Adult Ministry
    - The Adult Ministry of the Board of Christian Education consists of all organizations that minister to all persons ages 36 and above.


    Young Adult Ministry
    - The mission of the Young Adult Council is to serve as the organizational bridge for those between the late teen and mid-adult years, during which the members’ Christian maturity will be systematically nurtured through a variety of faith-based activities. Such activities may include: Bible Study, Issue-Specific Seminars and Workshops, Retreats and interaction with other church organizations for mutual benefit.


    Christian Youth Fellowship
    - The CYF provides the opportunity for youth ages 12-17 to express their personality in terms of leadership, responsibility and services. The activities aim for the following:

    They meet monthly at the church.


    Children's Ministry
    - The Children's Ministry is destined to enhance the spiritual life for children ages 1-11. There are a variety of ministries to assist in the learning process both spiritually and socially.


    Acolytes
    - The Acolytes lead the worship service procession and recessionals by lighting and extinguishing altar candles. They start at age 8 and are under the direct supervision of the Stewardess Board.


    Nursery Ministry
    - The nursery is open during the 11 :00 A.M. worship service in the "Nursery" located on the 2nd floor. Babies & young children 5 years and younger are welcome.


    Ushers
    -

    Ushers are the doorkeepers of the house of the Lord. They admit the people to the house of worship, attend their comfort while they are therein and perform other duties assigned them by the pastor to help proclaim the gospel and redeem the souls of men.


    Golden Star Club
    - The purpose of the Golden Star Club is to promote the following:


    Fellowship Club
    - The Fellowship Club was organized in 1963. Its purpose is to enhance the spiritual growth of the church. The Club promotes fellowship among our congregation. They serve as ushers at the 11 :00 A.M. worship services on the second (2nd) Sundays. The club meets monthly at various announced locations. They host and hosted number of events, such as Annual Fellowship Sundays for the community, other churches and family members.


    Dance Ministry
    -


    Gospel Aerobics Ministry
    - Gospel Aerobics provides a spiritual environment for those who would benefit from low impact cardio movements and muscle conditioning, as well as strengthening our temples for the service of the Lord. This class meets every Monday and Wednesday from 7:00 pm to 8:00 pm in the Julius Washington Fellowship Hall. There are no charges or fees.
